Woopi Scavenge (NSW)
The Woopi Seaside Scavenge was a part of the larger Coffs Coast Eco Surf Fest which was the first of it’s kind that the Coffs Harbour City Council has put on. The festival took place on Saturday the 19th of October. Seaside Scavenge was in the Woolgoolga beach reserve with other community groups such as Boomerang Bags, Sea Shepherd, Surfrider Foundation, and an array of local businesses who provided activities like the DIY Surf Wax Workshop, Surfboard Repairs, Groms Surf Comp and even a Surfboard Swap!
Overall 104 participants signed up to participate in the Seaside Scavenge and what we found was that Woolgoolga was a pretty clean town! We only cleaned up 60.9kg of litter from the area! We think this is due to the strong communitity in Woolgoolga who are active custodians of the land. Special mention to Jim who we heard was out there cleaning up the town with his dog on the daily!
56.8% of participants had never taken part in a beach clean up activity before which shows us that we are still managing to engage a new audience at the Scavenge. In saying that 56.8% is a lot lower than the average 80% we are used to seeing which shows us that the Woopi community (and a good amount of other communities Seaside Scavenge has visited this year) is well on their way toward an environmentally friendly community as a whole!
