NSW COMMUNITY EVENT COORDINATOR

About US

Seaside Scavenge (SS) is a not-for-profit organisation that coordinates waterway cleanup and clothes swap events where the litter collected becomes the currency to purchase quality second-hand clothes, books and other items that have been donated by the local community, and set-up as a pop-up market. SS engages local business, community groups, musicians and other volunteers for support at its events and to help further its efforts in raising awareness and promoting alternatives to single-use plastics, their impact on our marine environment and the effects of the fast-fashion industry on the environment. 

Since March 2015, SS has hosted 35 events where 7.4 tonnes of litter (including over 125,000 cigarette butts) were collected and 5.2 tonnes of second-hand goods were redistributed, with the help of over 3,500 people in 23 communities across Australia. 90% of these individuals (or Scavengers) had never previously attended a clean-up event. SS is extremely proud of its past achievements and is looking to grow and continue to have an impact in the future!


About the Role

The NSW Community Event Coordinator will have the unique opportunity to organise and facilitate Seaside Scavenge events, an innovative approach to combat waterway pollution and waste, across NSW on a 12-month basis for 2019 (with an option to extend). SS is looking for an enthusiastic, all-rounder ready to sink their teeth into something real and become an integral piece of the Scavenge movement.  

There will be 12-15 events scheduled for 2019. It will be the responsibility of the NSW Community Event Coordinator to organise all aspects of the event according to the SS Handbook and Toolkit. The Event Coordinator will be trained on the job in Sydney and supported by the Seaside Scavenge Founder.

You’re someone who wants to:

  • Strengthen community connection and action around waste;

  • Drive throughout NSW (in a manual van) 

You possess the following qualities:

  • Confident – capable of liaising and pitching with multiple stakeholders; businesses, media, local government, musicians, community organisations and volunteers;

  • Competent – efficient, deadline orientated & reliable to host events independently with roughly 150 non-concurrent participants;

  • Passionate – about our environment. Events are held on weekends, so someone that can jump out of bed on Saturday and get people pumped about rubbish;

  • Problem Solver – this is event coordination, so if something can go wrong (like the weather) it will. You’ll need a hardy, can-do attitude;

  • Leader – a strong person who is a great communicator, instills trust and capable of delegating tasks where necessary.


SKILLS & EXPERIENCE

  • Practical experience in Project Management or Event Coordination;

  • Past volunteer experience, preferably at events;

  • Owning or contributing to Facebook/Instagram/Twitter Brand Pages;

  • Experience working as part of a team (i.e. Sports club or committee);

  • Proficient computer skills, including use of Microsoft Office and Google Apps


WORKING HOURS

As a full-time employee, you will be expected to work 38 hours per week, plus any reasonable additional hours. Given the nature of the work and the location of the scheduled events, you will be required to work on weekends and to travel to various locations throughout NSW. SS will provide a VW van for use when travelling.

For weekend days worked, candidate will receive days in lieu according to Seaside Scavenge Employment Policy. On weeks and weekends where the candidate is required to travel outside of Sydney to host Scavenge events, their accommodation costs will be paid for and a food stipend given per-day.
