Bondi Blitz Festival

Sunday the 7th of April we had 72 participants help us remove 49.1 KG of waste and 19.5 KG of recycling from Bondi Beach, Sydney. This included 5,403 bits of litter, 3,125 of which were cigarette butts!

We participated in the Bondi Blitz Festival thanks to the support of Waverley Council and their Second Nature campaign. It was our 48th event and we’re so stoked to have been involved in such a fun day. Bondi Blitz Festival is a part of the WAYS Youth Week which is an opportunity for young people to express their ideas and views, act on issues that affect their lives and create and enjoy activities and events.

Along with our 72 participants we had 14 volunteers on the beach. It was interesting for us to see that in Bondi there were a lot of small microplastics, cigarette butts and single-use plastic items from the nearby shops and cafes.

This shows that there is work to be done throughout Bondi so that the community can have options when disposing of their litter correctly. Butt bins for cigarettes would be a great place to start and the local business could also work to transition towards single-use plastic alternative!

Live tunes were blasting out of the Bondi Blitz stage all day which created an awesome vibe for everyone who was down there with us.

Thankfully Bondi has some dedicated businesses that are always keen to get behind the Scavenge so we had prizes from Power Living Yoga, Dive Centre Bondi, The Shop & Wine Bar, Balance In Motion Physio and lululemon. Congratulations to those who took home the prizes!

To everyone that participated, we hope you’re enjoying your new, yet pre-loved items purchased with your trash tokens! The second-hand market is a core element of the Scavenge, as it’s about reducing waste on all levels. HUGE thanks to all the people that donated their goods!

Seaside Scavenge wants to plant a seed of environmental nurturing in you. This involves thinking beyond waterway litter and focusing on litter prevention. In short - create less waste. Be creative and think of all the different ways you could cut down on your own consumption.

If you want to be more involved with what we do here at the Scavenge you can get in touch about organising a corporate workshop, school talks or university presentations. Here’s the link to contact us.

We love hearing from you. We’re always looking for volunteers & donations as well so please don’t be shy! Send us a message to find out more.
