A Golden Sunday
The Gold Coast Seaside Scavenge was scheduled for Saturday the 12th of October although due to some poor weather conditions we had to postpone it until Sunday the 13th.
Thank you so much to all the volunteers, musicians, community groups and to the rest of the community who understood the decision we made to move the event and were so accommodating in the change! We could not have pulled off this event without you all.
Talk about a rain check! We cleaned up a massive 210.9kg of litter from Pratten park and Broadbeach. There were 4,543 cigarette butts picked up as well as plenty of microplastics and small foil packagings. We picked up a grand total of 10,289 pieces of litter and redistributed 86.2kg of preloved clothes, books and toys.
109 participants showed up to the Goldy Scavenge which was an epic turnout considering the changes made. We had 4 community groups with us which were Boomerang Bags, Reef Check Australia, Sea Shepherd and FEAL. We also had 3 amazing musicians who were Sean Fitzgerald, Phil & Tilley.
The City of Gold Coast were super helpful is all aspects as well so hats off to the team who are doing a great work to Keep The Goldy Beautiful!
58.3% of participants had never taken part in a beach clean up activity before which shows us that we are still managing to engage a new audience at the Scavenge. In saying that 58.3% is a lot lower than the average 80% we are used to seeing which shows us that the Goldy community is definitely more eco aware than other communities we’ve visited.
Here are the prize winners for the Goldy Seaside Scavenge:
Most Litter picked up went to Tara with 695 pieces - $100 Gift Voucher from Patagonia
Most Cigarette Butts picked up went to Tavia with 425 - 5 Class Pass from Miami Yoga Room
Most Straws went to Treena with 10 straws - Snorkel & Dive Experience for Two from Gold Coast Dive Centre
Weirdest Item went to Mary with an old copy of the book Romeo & Juliet - Surf Lessons from Gold Coast Surf Academy
To everyone that participated, we hope you’re enjoying your new, yet pre-loved items purchased with your trash tokens! The second-hand market is a core element of the Scavenge, as it’s about reducing waste on all levels. HUGE thanks to all the people that donated their goods!
Seaside Scavenge wants to plant a seed of environmental nurturing in you. This involves thinking beyond waterway litter and focusing on litter prevention. In short - create less waste. Be creative and think of all the different ways you could cut down on your own consumption.
