Fourth Port Scavenge & going strong!

Our fourth Scavenge in Port Macquarie was the first time we were blessed with sunshine! YAY our first year with no rain! :) The event was opened by Aalii doing an Acknowledgement of country and the Djiyagan Dhanbaan group who presented a short song in Language Bila Yii Maraliyn (The River is Flowing).

We had 176 Scavenges join us on Saturday who collected 255kg of trash! With 2,205 cigarette butts collected, 2,136 pieces of soft plastic and 1,203 pieces of cardboard/paper.

26 volunteers ran the event and they were absolutely amazing!! Without their hard work and dedication the Scavenge would not have been the  success it was, so thank you!

The chill out zone was filled with the beautiful sounds of local McKillop High students Francesca Plentinger and Violet Shepherd  There’s some budding talent in this special corner of the world!

Rhi Rebellion and Meegs Stevens kept the commentary rolling with engaging chats with Coastal Warriors, Shalice – a 12-year-old lcoal ocean warrior – and Boomerang Bags, whilst also educating our audience with some amazing facts about our oceans!

We had 383.69kg of donations from the good people of Port Mac for our second hand market stalls. The Duck Brewery donated 60 schooners of beer, Kate Caters 20 loafs of bread and home made jams in exchange for trash tokens and you could gain entry in to the amazing workshops run by The Nature School and Frugal Arts for one token.

We also had to change the prize for most straws collected to most cigarettes collected! This is really exciting because at this Seaside Scavenge we saw such a reduction of straws being Scavenged with a total of 239 straws/cutlery collected in comparison to 474 at our last Town Beach Scavenge!

Thank you Coastal Warriors - Mid North Coast for your fight against plastic straws, the cafes of Port Macquarie switching to paper and metal straws and to consumers for saying no to plastic straws! We can see the difference!

This year we had twelve cafes take part of the Plastic Free Pledge on the day, this is huge! Thank you LV’s on Clarence, Four Espresso, Carlos & Co Cafe, Casualties Espresso, Studio 3 Espresso, Drury Lane Eatery, Salty Crew, Breakwall HQ, Town Green Inn, Chop ’N’ Chill, The Native Catering Co and Beach Break Cafe North Haven. You guys are really making a difference when it comes to plastic pollution and you can see it in the number of straws being scavenged!

We owe another congratulations to the prize winners and a hats off to the local business’s who sponsored these amazing prizes.

-    To Oliver Godson who collected most trash scoring a $50 Bills Fishhouse + Bar Voucher.

-    To Joshua Sims who scavenged furthest and has won a Port Macquarie Surf School voucher

-    To Dimity Sinclair who collected most cigarette butts being rewarded with a Sea Acres Rainforest Centre annual family pass.

-    To the team, Claire & Finley who collected most trash. We hope you enjoy your Glasshouse Port Macquarie  voucher for two for next season

-    To the Team that Scavenged the furthest - bragging rights - name written on Seaside trophy! - AAS who cleaned up Koolunbung Creek.

Another part of the Scavenge that really warmed my heart was the amount of environmental groups in Port Mac involved on the day. We had tents from Coastal Warriors, Boomerang Bags, The Climate Council, Forever Energy and the Hastings Council.

Port Macquarie you truly are amazing. Thank you to everyone involved for being the positive change that we need in the world and for making our waterways clean again.
